Hastings War Memorial, in Alexander Park, was commissioned by the Mayor of Hastings upon the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on 28th June 1919. The Mayor, Mr A Blackman, announced “The Peace was signed today. On this day of rejoicing let us show our gratitude to the men who won this peace through Victory, made the freedom of the world secure and prevented the confiscation of possessions.” The memorial was designed by Margaret Winser, a Kent based sculptress who studied under Rodin. The dedication ceremony took place on 26th March 1922.
Hastings War Memorial lists the names of 1,253 service personnel from Hastings and St Leonards who died during the First World War. I made the list below as I could not find one through a Google search.
There are fifteen panels that surround the base of the memorial. The list below presents the names in the order they are shown on those panels. There are some differences I’ve noticed between the spelling of names shown on this website and those on the memorial, however I have left the names as spelt on the memorial for this list. I have written the soldier’s rank out in full rather than the abbreviation present on the panels. Where I have not been able to interpret the rank acronym, I have left it as shown.
If you have a photograph and information about any man not linked on the list, I would be very happy to add them to the website. Please submit details through the ‘Add a Serviceman’ page.
You can search the list below by pressing ‘Ctrl’ and ‘F’ together and typing the surname of the person you are looking for in the box that appears in the browser window.

thanks! A C Rensch was my GGG Uncle
Please be aware there is an error relating to my grandfather’s name, which is shown as Driver Albert Years – his name is Yeats.
Dear Sylvia. Thank you for highlighting the error. I have typed out the surnames as actually spelt on Hastings War Memorial, but have shown the correct spelling in brackets. I don’t have a record of Albert on the website. I would be happy to add his details if you were happy to share them here: http://www.ww1rollofhonour.co.uk/index.php/add-a-serviceman/ . Kind Regards, Kieron
I see from your roll of honour that my Grandfather`s name
is not included ….. Cpl` William Allen, 1st Bat`, Hampshire Regt`, 8007, killed 22nd May 1918, who also served with the 2nd Bat` and
in the Boar War. Born at 14, Alfred Street, St.Leonards. I do hope his name is on the War Memorial. I am happy to share further details if needed. Also,… He is buried at Le-Vertanoy, France, British War Graves.
Hi Gordon. Thank you for taking the time to comment. William isn’t remembered on Hastings War Memorial. I’ve double checked my photographs of the name plates, and the only two Allen’s are the ones listed on this page. This is not uncommon, quite a few local men who lost their lives during the war aren’t recorded on the memorial. I’m told this was not always an oversight by the authorities, it sometimes was at the family’s express wishes. I would be very happy to add William’s record to this website. If ok with you, please complete the form on this page and I’ll set it up for you: http://www.ww1rollofhonour.co.uk/index.php/add-a-serviceman/. Kind Regards, Kieron
I have send off some details as requested but, would it be possible to check the War memorial again for Cpl` William Allen`s name around the area of Africa and Italy ?. Thankyou for contacting me I do appreciate it
Hi Gordon, thanks for sending William’s information over. He’ll be added to this site shortly. I will check the memorial again – your photograph shows a plaque I must have missed first time round. Kind Regards, Kieron.
Hello again Gordon. I found William’s name plus one other casualty on the additional panel on the memorial, so have updated this page with their details. Kind Regards, Kieron
On sorting through the possessions of my recently deceased mother (born 1925) I’ve discovered a beautiful scroll to her uncle, William Bailey, dated Nov 1919. It’s signed by the then Mayor, A B Blackman, thanking him for his patriotism and self sacrifice …. “ etc. I know Great Uncle Bill was in the army. Would this be of any interest to a local museum? Thank you. I live in London.
Hi Marilyn. Thank you for your question. The scroll was sent out to many service personnel, some detail about it can be read here: (http://www.eastsussexww1.org.uk/men-served-townspeoples-letter-gratitude/index.html). I have one given to my Great Grandfather.
Is it possible that this B Bailey is your Great Uncle? http://www.ww1rollofhonour.co.uk/index.php/2017/06/bailey-b/. The newspaper often printed shortened first names, I’d be happy to add a copy of the scroll to his record if it is the same person. Kind Regards, Kieron
Hi,
A while ago, I had the chance to visit All Souls Church in Clive Vale and recorded the servicemen memorialised in that church, more than a few of which do not appear to be on your list for the main Alexandra Park memorial. The list is at https://historymap.info/All_Souls_Church#War_Memorial Whilst messaging, would it be possible for me to add the names you have listed to my list at https://historymap.info/WW1_Casualty_List – I will, of course, add your excellent site as an additional resource.
Dear Kieron,
I hope you are well. I have found some information and a photograph of George Pagnoni via the IWM website.
I am happy to send you the link if you would like to add this information to this much appreciated website.
Yours sincerely
Kieron
Hi Kieron,
Thanks for getting in touch. Yes that would be great to add George to this site. You can add the link to the comments, or send it by email to ww1rollofhonour (at) gmail . com.
Did you you and a couple of your brothers go to William Parker School? Your brothers were in my year I think, and I remember your name because Kieron is spelled correctly!
Kind Regards, Kieron
Yes Kieron, There were 4 of us Locke brothers at William Parker school. I think I do remember a Kieron with the same spelling bring in the twins year. Great web site. Hope you are well. I will try my best to get the info re Pagnoni on to the site. I shall pass on your regards to the twins.
There doesn’t seem to be anything that is relative to the constable name…CONSTABLE E.M ? which is most definitely on there ,any help would be grately appreciated ..kind regards .
Mr luke constable
Hi Luke, Elizabeth Constable, shown as E. M. Constable on the memorial, was killed in March 1943 during an attack on the town by German fighter bombers. I have some further details about her on my other website here: http://ww2rollofhonour.co.uk/2020/02/20/constable-elizabeth-mary/. Kind Regards, Kieron
