After Church Parade the Battalion was marched back to the Parade Ground, and Private Dabson called to the front. The Colonel then said that it gave him great pleasure to decorate one of the 5th, and complimented him on his deed. Prior to pinning on the medal he read out what gained it: ‘On several occasions Private Dabson showed great devotion to duty and bravery in rescuing wounded men from No Mans Land under heavy shell fire.’ The Colonel warmly shook hands with Private Dabson, as did all the other officers.
