Other Info: Killed in Action. According to CWGC, John died aged 29 on 14th November 1916. He is remembered at Martinpuich British Cemetery, grave reference E.16.
An article in the Hastings & St Leonards Observer dated 25th November 2016 reads: “It is with regret that we announce the death of Sergeant John Lusby Dash, or Lorne House, Western Road, St Leonards, and one of the eight sons, now serving their country, of Mr. and Mrs. Dash, of 3 Western Road.
He enlisted three days after the outbreak of war, and has been at the Front for nearly two years. Previous to the war Mr. Dash was employed by Skinners, or St Leonards, and was well known and much respected in the town.
The young man was only 29 years of age, and leaves a widow and two children. Mrs. Dash has received a letter from Sergeant Dash’s officer, in which it says: ‘It is with the utmost regret that I have to inform you of the death of Sergeant J. L. Dash, who was killed by the explosion of a shell. He was killed instantly, so you may have the comfort of knowing that he suffered no pain. I cannot say of grieved I am to have to write this news to you, as your husband was one of my most valued N.C.O.’s and a friend for whom I had the greatest affection. I can only trust that your grief will be softened by the knowledge that he had died a man’s death for his country and to save his relations from the horrors of war of which we out here have seen so much.’
Deep sympathy will be extended to the widow and family in their sad loss.”

Thank you - you have just solved a family mystery of a photograph my dad has. He always thought it was either his grandad, John Edward Lusby Dash (killed in 1916), or a relative of his. It turns out there were 7 Dash brothers that fought and the photo he has is of one of his grandad's brothers - Charles Dash!
My dad has his grandfather's war medals, certificates, thank you from the king & war penny but it has been lovely to see the faces of his brothers who also fought.
my grandad showed me some of his war stuff and i thought about learning a bit more and this has given some good infomation

Can I please ask a big favour from all of my Facebook friends? In 2019 I finally found the place in France where my grandfather, Ethelbert Edward Dash, was seriously wounded in action during WW1. We visited the British Cemetery in Martinpuich where some of his less fortunate comrades were laid to rest and found a headstone bearing another soldier bearing my family name, more details were in the book of remembrance. I would like to know a bit more about John Lusby Dash and his descendants so would you please share this post in the hope that someone might recognise the name. Thank you.O
