Was on the Queen Mary when she was sunk in the action off Jutland on 31st May 1915. His father is well known as an employee of the telephone service and a Lieutenant in the Blacklands CLB. The lost sailor was a bugler and joined the Navy six years ago, having previously been a naval volunteer. He was a good shot, and when 14 years of age won the boy’s challenge cup at Bisley.
According to CWGC, Bertram was 22 when he died and is remembered at Portsmouth Naval Memorial on panel 12. He was born in Charlton, London and his parents later lived in Bexhill.
