In the 1911 census Harold Arthur Cruttenden was with his family at the Bull Inn, Bulverhythe. He was 21, and like all his siblings was born in Hastings. His occupation was given as electrician for a builder. Henry James the father was the publican at the Bull. He had been baptised at Ninfield in 1889, his father being a publican in Bexhill; the father died in 1930 at 147 Bulverhythe Road.
He attested for the RGA 15 November 1914, 54802, at Hastings. He served in France from 17 July 1915, and received a gunshot wound to the right ankle in February 1918. He was promoted from Gunner to Bombardier. He was demobilized 25 February 1919.
In the 1921 census Harold was again with his family at the Bull, an electric wireman for Squirrell & Co., domestic engineers, at Station Road, Bexhill.
In the 1939 Register he was at 131 Bulverhythe Road, plumber and electrician, married to Doris Nellie. He had married her on the 15 October 1932, St Ethelburga’s, St Leonards, she as Vidler. He died in 1955 at Brompton Hospital, but of 38 Havelock Road, Bexhill. She later married a Mr Barrett.
